Anyone visiting Lünen – whether for a weekend or a stopover in the Ruhr region – will be surprised by just how much this charming town on the River Lippe has to offer. Here are our 10 personal highlights for your visit to Lünen.

1. Take a selfie with the Persiluhr

The famous Persi Clock is a real eye-catcher in the heart of the city. Situated right on the main square, it is a true city landmark, a popular meeting place and the number one photo opportunity.

📍 Our tip: The Persi Clock is right in front of our hotel – so you can stroll past it every day.

2. A stroll through the city centre and the old town

Half-timbered houses, small shops, cosy cafés and views of the River Lippe – a stroll through Lünen’s old town invites you to explore. The town centre is compact and offers everything you need for a leisurely stroll – without any of the hustle and bustle of a big city.

3. Den Seepark Lünen mit dem Horstmarer See erkunden

Photo: Adobe Stock

The Seepark is Lünen’s greenest retreat. Whether you’re out for a walk, a jog, a picnic or simply relaxing on the shores of Lake Horstmar – there’s a spot for everyone to enjoy nature here. There are playgrounds for children, long trails for those who like to be active, and a variety of events in the summer. The large disc golf course, which is free to use, is also very popular.

🌟 Our tip: Pack a small picnic blanket and enjoy the afternoon.

4. A cycle ride along the River Lippe – pure nature

The River Lippe winds its way through Lünen like a green ribbon – perfect for a bike ride! Whether you choose the Römer-Lippe Route or the Lippe-Auen Cycle Path, this is the ideal place to combine nature, history and exercise.

🚴 Bikes can be hired in town – we’re happy to help!

5. Experience industrial heritage at Preußenhafen

Photo: Adobe Stock

Where coal used to be loaded, a popular destination has now emerged. Preußenhafen is both a monument to industrial heritage and a place to stroll or watch the boats go by. A lovely stop for walkers and cyclists.

6. Marvel at the Colani Egg

Photo: Adobe Stock

Perched atop an old winding tower is the famous “Colani Egg” – a futuristic observation tower designed by Luigi Colani. It serves as a reminder of Lünen’s industrial past and is a popular photo opportunity, demonstrating that Lünen can also be modern. By the way: it is open to visitors on selected dates and offers a superb view of the region.

7. Stroll through the Viktualienmarkt (on Saturdays)

Every Saturday, Lüner Marktplatz transforms into a vibrant hub of activity. Whether you’re looking for fresh fruit, cheese, flowers or antipasti, the Viktualienmarkt is the perfect place for food lovers. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.

8. Relax by the River Lippe

Just take a deep breath – there’s no better place to do it than by the River Lippe. In the city centre, you’ll find idyllic spots to relax, read or soak up the sun. The riverside promenade at sunset is particularly lovely.

9. Watch a film at the Lünen Film Festival

The Lünen Film Festival is renowned far beyond the city limits. Film lovers will be in their element here – with premieres, fascinating discussions with directors and a unique festival atmosphere.

🎬 A real cultural highlight!

10. Flying a kite at the Lüner Kite Festival

Photo: Adobe Stock

When the autumn breeze blows, the kites take to the skies in Lünen! The Lünen Kite Festival attracts families and aviation enthusiasts with colourful displays in the sky, workshops and hands-on activities – a lovely day out for young and old alike.

📌 Extra tip:

All these attractions are easily accessible from the Hotel An der Persiluhr – on foot, by bike or by bus. Ask us at reception for routes, dates or details of current events!

Immerse yourself in the region’s football culture

Ballspielverein Borussia Dortmund, better known as BVB, was founded not far from Borsigplatz in the north of Dortmund. Initially, matches were played on the legendary ‘Weiße Wiese’. In the 1930s, the club moved to the ‘Rote Erde’ stadium in the south of Dortmund – yet Borsigplatz remained the heart of the club.

To this day, it remains a symbolic place for fans and players alike: whether it’s a championship celebration or a legendary moment – the spirit of Borussia lives on here. Anyone wishing to experience the history up close can discover the birthplaces of BVB on guided tours such as ‘Die Weiße Wiese’ or ‘Der Stern des Nordens’.

Today, Borussia Dortmund are playing at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK – still better known to many by its traditional name: Westfalenstadion. With a capacity of over 80,000, it is Germany’s largest stadium and a must-visit for all football fans.
